Curzon suffer blow to promotion hopes

Back-to-back defeats in the league have left Curzon Ashton’s promotion hopes hanging in the balance.

Their latest defeat came on Tuesday night at the hands of Peterborough Sports, with the visitors coming from behind to steal the points.

The Nash made the perfect start under the Tameside Stadium lights, taking the lead after just 19 minutes through Jimmy Spencer, who latched onto a loose pass from the opposition and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to put his side ahead.

Visitors Peterborough then equalised soon after, drawing level through midfielder Dan Jarvis.

Despite the setback, Curzon continued to probe and went close to regaining their lead on the stroke of half-time when Adam Barton’s ball in found Jimmy Spencer, who was denied his second of the evening by a fine save from Peter Crook in the Peterborough goal.

The home side then survived a scare just after the half-hour mark when Mark Jones' effort cannoned off the crossbar and somehow stayed out.

But Jones would get another opportunity just minutes later, and this time he made no mistake and fired the ball home after a defensive error from the hosts.

Despite the home side’s best efforts, they were unable to find an equaliser and the visitors went back to Cambridgeshire with all three points.

The defeat sees Craig Mahon’s side move down to tenth in the table ahead of their massive test this weekend when they visit top-of-the-league Tamworth.
