Courtney Meppen-Walter dies aged 32

Former Glossop North End, Ashton United and Stalybridge Celtic defender Courtney Meppen-Walter has passed away, aged 32. 

The ex-Manchester City stars’ death was announced earlier this afternoon, in a statement from his former club Bury. 

The statement read:  

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player Courtney Meppen-Walter, at the age of 32.  

The thoughts and condolences of everyone at #buryfc are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.” 

The central defender made over 50 appearances for Glossop between 2017 and 2018, following a short spell at Hurst Cross a year prior. 

Meppen-Walter featured most recently for Stalybridge, where he made a handful of appearances under current manager Jon Macken. 

Celtic likewise paid tribute to their former player, with a statement reading:

"Stalybridge Celtic is saddened to learn of the passing of former player Courtney Meppen-Walter.

Courtney featured for the Club during the 2024-25 season, scoring a memorable free-kick away at Seel Park.

The thoughts of everyone at Celtic goes to Courtney’s loved ones.

Rest in peace Mepps."

Also taking to social media to share a touching tribute was former Celtic and Bury defender Aaron Chalmers, who commented:

"My mate. My brother. What a guy you was. Had some belting time and memories that I wish cherish. Never forget you big man."

Details regarding the circumstances of his passing are yet to be released.
