City Watch: Blues secure top 5 spot

The day has finally come, the end of the season is here, and to be honest, I think a lot of City fans will be glad to have this campaign behind us all.

I won’t focus too much on the negative, because I think I could go on and on, but it’s not been the best season under Pep for the Blues.

However, City secured their spot in next season’s Champions League on Sunday with a win against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

All that was needed was a point, but the Blues got all three in a 2-0 win with Ilkay Gundogan scoring an acrobatic overhead kick and Erling Haaland bagging himself a penalty.

Although I was fairly certain we’d get the points to secure our spot in the Champions League, Fulham away was always a potential banana skin, but Kevin De Bruyne’s swan song game didn’t end in drama.

Speaking of the Belgian, he didn’t start the game, but he did come on for the final 10 minutes and got all the plaudits at the end of the game from the fans.

I was fairly emotional watching him walk off the pitch for the final time in a City shirt, knowing I’ll never chant the famous ‘Oh Kevin De Bruyne’ again.

Either way, this season was Pep’s second trophyless season for City, losing in the FA Cup final and finishing third in the Premier League.

For all the success we’ve had over recent years, I’m not going to complain at all.

There’s a lot of positives to take from the season, and I think the players will be even more hungry having to go and fight for the crown back.

We have a lot to go before the start of the new campaign though, and this column will continue throughout the summer and therefore the Club World Cup in America, which starts at the end of next month.

It’s been a pleasure writing City Watch this season, even through the lows, which there have been quite a few of this season.

I hope you’ve all enjoyed reading my thoughts and feelings, and continue to do so over the summer and next season.

The column will be focused on the transfer market for City and the Club World Cup, hopefully with Rodri back, this will prove a little more successful!
