After a week off from the City Watch column, I have returned to continue the summer gossip as we prepare for next season following the conclusion of the World Cup.
The truth is, there isn’t much to talk about so far, hence why I’m enjoying writing the England column so much, but there are a few bits we can discuss.
It appears as though Enzo Maresca’s announcement as the new City manager is imminent after the club reportedly agreed a settlement with the Italian’s previous club, Chelsea, regading compensation.
This gives the green light for Enzo to sign, and honestly, after months of speculation, I’m looking forward to it being confirmed.
There have been dozens of reports about what the future looks like, what players will be kept, which ones won’t and who City are going in for this summer.
Personally, I wouldn’t want to go signing a heap of new players this summer, we’re in a transition period with a new boss for the first time in ten years and we have a young, hungry squad, I would want to give it a season before splashing the cash.
Naturally, the higher ups aren’t going to listen to me, especially as it’s reported we’re going to pay more than £120 million for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson.
This is a transfer I can understand, he’s a young English talent with Premier League experience under his belt, but the price tag nowhere near justifies the player in my opinion.
If Pep was still around, I could understand it a little more, the trust he built in everyone over his time at the club meant that whatever we spent on a player, we knew as fans there was a justification behind it, and the Spaniard obviously saw real talent and a way to integrate them into the team.
However, with Guardiola gone, I just don’t think there’s a justification for it, maybe we’re just stopping him going to our neighbours!
Hopefully by next week, the confirmation of Maresca will be out and we will have more clarity on the Elliot Anderson deal.
