Chadderton win another FA Vase thriller

FA Vase Second Qualifying Round: Chadderton FC 3-2 Brigg Town

Chadderton FC will face Guisborough Town in the First Round Proper of the Buildbase FA Vase after coming out on top in another thriller in the competition, this time at the expense of a spirited Brigg Town. 

Dave Fish's side were trailing 2-0 at the ARK Fleetech Stadium but recovered from a poor start to produce a superb comeback on home soil and win 3-2 for the second successive round - after seeing off Parkgate on the road last month. 

The visitors from Lincolnshire started brightly and went ahead in the 11th minute as Steve McCarron's fierce strike from the edge of the area found the bottom corner. 

Chadderton keeper Jordan Hadlow was beaten again seven minutes later when Jake Reed headed in a pinpoint cross from the right flank to double Brigg Town's advantage. 

There were chances at both ends as James Dwyer headed wide from a set-piece for Chaddy before Reed miscued a volley which went wide as he searched for his second goal of the game. 

But before long, the hosts got themselves back in the contest as Dwyer made no mistake this time, heading in Jordan Butterworth's free-kick at the back post to reduce the arrears on 24 minutes. 

After providing the first, Butterworth scored the second himself in extraordinary circumstances to put Chaddy back on level terms six minutes before the break. 

The former Curzon Ashton midfielder tried his luck with an audacious lofted free-kick from just inside Brigg's half and it beat goalkeeper Paddy Shaw to find the top corner.  

Brigg started the second half the stronger side as Hadlow was forced into two good saves to deny Tom Raithby and Jack Tierney. 

The keeper then proved to be one of the heroes of the day with a penalty save after Dwyer was booked for a sliding challenge on McCarron inside the box. 

The tie became scrappy and Chaddy were forced to see out the final 15 minutes with 10 men after Reece Lyndon was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on Short. 

Hadlow was kept busy as Brigg looked to capitalise on their numerical advantage but it was the hosts who grabbed a late winner with seven minutes remaining. 

Moments after seeing a half-volley tipped around the post by Shaw, Dwyer made up for conceding the earlier penalty by powering home a bullet header from close range to net his second of the game. 

Chaddy withstood some late pressure from the visitors to hold onto their lead and progress to the next round, where they will face Guisborough on 12 October - following the conclusion of Monday's draw at Wembley Stadium - with £825 in prize money up for grabs for the winning team.
