Bloods beaten by league leaders

Droylsden followed up Saturday’s 2-2 draw with a visit to promotion rivals Atherton, knowing that three points would secure them a home tie in the play-off semi-finals, however, they were beaten by the league leaders in a 2-0 defeat.

Droylsden conceded another early goal in this game. Brandon Dawson gave the visitors the lead after chipping the ball over Jordan Latham.

Atherton would then go close to doubling their lead in the 15th minute, Tom Romano’s effort hitting the post to keep Dave Pace’s side in the contest. Within a minute, they were almost back in the game when they had the ball in the back of the net, but it was ruled out for offside.

Just before half time, their best opportunity of the game arose when they received a penalty following a foul on Harry Forshaw, but Daniel McLaughlin’s spot kick was saved by Joe Bickerstaffe.

Droylsden were then unable to create anything of significance in the second half, as Atherton held out until the 84th minute when they doubled their lead. Joe Bacon netted for the third consecutive game after a deflected cross fell into his path to put the game to bed.

For some time now, it’s been apparent that Droylsden are unlikely to go up by winning the division, but they still have a chance to earn promotion via the playoffs.

Dave Pace’s side has suffered some unfortunate results in recent weeks, but the squad is strong and has every chance of playing in the Premier Division next season.

With only two games left, the Bloods will need to ensure they secure a home tie in the semi-final to give themselves the best chance of securing a spot in the final. A trip to local side Maine Road awaits on Saturday, with their opponents sitting in midtable.
