Below Par Glossop Fall To Defeat

North One West: Bowdon 26-17 Glossop

A below par performance by Glossop, on the road at Bowdon, saw their top four hopes dented when they returned from Clay Lane empty handed.

Disappointingly for The Hillmen, it took sixty minutes for them to register their first score, by which time they were already trailing by 19 points.

Glossop travelled with a strong squad but took a hit in the opening few minutes when both Elliot Caine and Josh Edwards were forced off through injury.

In a worryingly familiar pattern in recent weeks, Glossop worked themselves into good positions in the first half but their hard work was often undone through unforced errors and poor discipline.

In contrast, Bowdon took their chances when they presented themselves and at half time they looked good value for their 19-0 lead.

Glossop responded well after the interval with some patient build up and improved ball retention, we saw Damien Chabas cross for an unconverted try.

The next twenty minutes saw both teams kicking in an attempt to make territorial gain, whilst being unable to create any real scoring opportunities. A break from halfway, followed by two penalties against Glossop saw the hosts score to take a 26-5 lead, leaving Glossop staring down the barrel.

Left with a mountain to climb, in the final fifteen minutes The Hillmen played their best rugby of the afternoon, with the ever impressive David Stanley coming to the fore in both attack and defence.

Glossop were rewarded with two further tries, firstly through Max Horsfall followed by a second from Chabas in the last minute of the match.

The final kick of the game was a conversion attempt from Rob Sonczak, which would have taken the visitors within seven points and brought with it a losing bonus point. From straight in front of the posts, the kick looked to be a formality. However, in a moment which summarised Glossop’s day, the ball blew off the kicking tee as the kick was about to be taken and was subsequently charged down by a Bowdon player, seeing Glossop head back to Derbyshire with nothing to show for their late rally. Final Score Bowdon 26 Gloosp 17

This weekend Glossop face a tough task as they visit Scunthorpe in the quarter final of the Notts Lincs & Derbyshire cup.
