Baker cooks up a storm at Hyde

Hyde United have strengthened their back line with the signing of Macclesfield defender Drew Baker.

The 21-year-old centre-half came to prominence in the 2021/22 season at FC United, where he impressed enough in his 27 games to earn a move to then-League One side, Fleetwood Town.

Baker only played a dozen times for the Cod Army, before loan spells in 2023 to League of Ireland clubs Bohemians and Waterford.

A former pupil at Manchester Grammar School, he began his football career in the Manchester City, Crewe Alexandra and Oldham Athletic academies, and represented England in the Independent Schools Under-18s side.

Also joining the Tigers is hard-working midfielder Jake Maltby.

Seen as a natural replacement for Callum Spooner, the former Bradford City trainee makes a two-division jump from NCEL side, Silsden.

Maltby anchored the midfield as a trialist in Tuesday night’s 2-0 win against Mossley in the Ray Stanley Memorial Shield.

He has also turned out for Farsley Celtic and Bradford-based club, Campion.

The Tigers travel to Bower Fold on Saturday for the Keith Trudgeon Memorial Trophy game against Stalybridge Celtic.
