Avro snatch a late point

North West Counties Premier Division: Avro 2-2 Runcorn Town

Avro snatch point at the death as they secured a vitally important point at the Vestacare Stadium against Runcorn Town.

Coming into the game Avro had been on a poor run of form lately and this showed in their last six games in which they have only one win and a draw. They did turn things around in their last game as they beat Skelmersdale 3-2 at home.

Runcorn had an upturn in form recently. Their last result was a hard-fought 3-3 draw at home to Padiham and that made sure they only had one loss from their last six fixtures.

It was the away side that started brightly in the game and they had a few decent chances in the opening stages. And they had the first major chance of the game in the 32nd minute as Runcorn had a penalty for a clumsy foul. David Forbes was the man fouled and he stepped up to take the penalty but his effort hit the post.

Just moments later Runcorn did deservedly take the lead on the 33rd minute. A long ball was played over the top of the struggling Avro defence for Craig Cairns to run through and smash the ball into the net.

Not many chances followed and Runcorn took a deserved lead into the second half.

In the 64th minute, Avro were starting to come into the game and they forced a great save from the Runcorn Keeper. Leon Wright managed to create some space and shot from the edge of the box but it was saved by Adam Reid.

In the 71st minute, Avro were level as they had a corner which was swung in and there was Lewis Lacy to head in off the post.

Their joy didn’t last long however as Runcorn began to apply heavy pressure as they searched for the winner. In the 81st minute, they thought they had it as Cairns scored again as he again slotted past Jordan Latham.

Avro looked like they heading for another defeat but they fought back and secured an unlikely goal in the 92nd minute. Lewis Lacey again the scorer as he smashed the ball home after some great build-up play.

Only a draw for Avro but one that will surely feel like a win.
