Aspinall eyes Premier League crown

Nathan Aspinall says it would "mean everything" if he was to be crowned the 2025 Premier League Darts champion, five years on from his heartbreaking defeat in the 2020 final.

The Stockport born star is preparing for tomorrow's Premier League Darts Finals Night, which gets underway from 7pm at London’s O2 Arena.

The Dinting resident secured his place in the play-offs last Thursday with a 6-2 thrashing of seven-time champion Michael Van Gerwen in Sheffield.

Though the current world number nine is delighted to have reached the final four, he has his sights set on going even further:

“For me the Premier League lineup this year is the strongest it’s ever been,” Aspinall told The Chronicle.

“So to finish in the top 4 after what has been a very tough and gruelling season, I’m very proud.

“But now I’m only two wins away from being Premier League champion.

“I’ve been there before, I’ve made the semis and the final and had the heartache of being beaten at both stages, but hopefully this year can be the year of the underdog, and I can go all the way.

“It would mean everything, especially after the last few years. I’ve had a lot of criticism and hatred on social media, so to go all the way against the calibre of players I’m up against, it’d be the greatest win of my career.”

Many were questioning Aspinall’s selection prior to this year’s competition, but it’s fair to say he has silenced these critics.

“I don’t think it was just me, Gezzy (Gerwyn Price) was one of those who was questioned as well, yet we’ve both made the play-offs.

“We don’t need to prove anything to anyone, but if we were to both make it to the final as well, that would be the ultimate way to stick two fingers up.”

The 33-year-old will face off against current world number one Luke Humphries in tomorrow night's play-off semi-final in the capital.

Should The Asp progress, he would play the winner of Price’s clash with Luke Littler in the final.
