Aldwinians ladies tournament returns

Following the success of last year’s event, Aldwinians RUFC once again hosted their annual ladies rugby tournament over the weekend.

The event, which took place on Saturday, brought together four women’s rugby teams from across the country- Wharfedale, Ponteland, Ashbourne and Aldwinians.

The four faced off against each other in a day full of competitive matches, community spirit and fundraising, with Aldwinians winning the Emily’s Cup, Ponteland winning the Vase and Ashbourne picking up the Plate.

The day was also an opportunity to raise money for a fantastic cause, with donations taken for ‘Emily’s Legacy’, a page set up to raise funds and awareness of the effects of baby loss.

Following the loss of their baby girl Emily back in 2021, Rachael and Stephen Marrow, - who coach/play at Aldwinians – set the page up in her honour.

Through various challenges, including a 196-mile bike ride last year, the pair have raised over £15,000 for charity, with that figure rising over the weekend.

Following the ladies tournament, Rachael told the Reporter:

“A huge thank you to everyone who came down to support and take part in the Emily’s Legacy Ladies Tournament at Aldwinians Rugby Club.

“It was an amazing day full of rugby, laughter, and community spirit.

“Even a quick downpour couldn’t dampen the mood – the rain soon passed, and we were lucky to have some sunshine and heat for most of the day.

“The rugby on display was brilliant, and it was extra special to see Aldwinians Ladies take home the Emily’s Legacy Cup.

“It was lovely to see a sea of orange tournament T-shirts around the pitch, showing just how much love and support there is for Emily’s Legacy.

“We’re so proud to have raised over £800 for the Emily’s Legacy fundraiser, supporting the Tameside Harebell Suite, 4Louis, and Little Cloud charities.

“Thanks again to everyone who made it such a special day – we couldn’t have done it without you!”
