Saturday saw the return of the annual Active Tameside Festival of Sport and Wellbeing, which welcomed people of all ages to come together to try out a range of new sports.
The free event, which took place at Active Copley in Stalybridge, was a fun-filled celebration of movement, health and community spirit, bringing together sports groups, wellbeing activities, demos and taster sessions.
The festival featured indoor, outdoor and water-based activities throughout the day, alongside free health checks and advice, careers information from Active Tameside, and even the chance for youngsters to meet Disney’s Princess Ariel.
A wide range of sports and activities were on offer, with children and young people aged five to 16 taking part in dodgeball games, karate, swimming, snorkelling, tennis, table tennis, archery, fencing, cricket and more.
Also involved on the day were a number of local sports clubs, including Stalybridge Swimming Club, Stalybridge Snorkelling Club, Goldcrest Archers, Micklehurst Cricket Club, Stayley Cricket Club, Ashton Fencing Club and Priory Tennis Club, who each delivered their own 60-minute sessions, which culminated in a dance performance by the Titans dance troupe.
Following the event Gavin Browne, Active Tameside’s Head of Active Education, said:
“It was such a fantastic day with over 550 attendances across all sessions. It was great to see so many people from different ages and backgrounds trying something new. Local partners, clubs, and groups showcased their services and provided links for people to continue being physically active. The aim was to provide a fun-filled day and improve the physical, social, and emotional wellbeing of the local community which certainly was the case. This is something we now plan to build on and showcase across our other sites across the Borough.”
