A day to remember for GNE

Over 1300 fans made the trip to the Asgard Engineering Stadium on Saturday as a set of Manchester United legends took on Glossop North End.  

Big names included 1999 treble winner David May and 2016 Premier League winner Danny Simpson, with 1968 European Cup winner John Aston Jr kicking the game off. 

A clinical performance saw the Hillmen run out as 7-2 winners in the glorious sunshine. 

To complete a superb day for the club, prior to kick-off, a blue plaque was unveiled to celebrate 125 years since Glossop North End’s promotion to the old first division.  

The plaque commemorates the late Sir Samuel-Wood, who bankrolled the club during it’s time in the first division.  

The day also helped raise money for a terrific cause, with donations taken during half-time for local charity Reuben’s Retreat, who support families who have suffered the loss of a child or have a child living with medical complexities.  

“There were some great scenes today,” GNE chairman Dave Atkinson told the Chronicle following the event. 

“It was great to see some familiar faces, I spoke to Lee Martin earlier who played for the club around 30 years ago, it's been brilliant. 

“A lot of work has been put in behind the scenes and it’s a shame we couldn't sell more tickets, the demand there but we just couldn’t go over maximum capacity. 

“Hopefully those that have missed out can come down and watch us next season and see what we’re all about. 

“As much as the football has been great, I thought the plaque unveiling this morning was brilliant, the speeches were fantastic and it’s another piece of history for the club.”
