79-year-old runner completes 350th parkrun

It was a momentous day for one local runner on Saturday (18 March), as Tony Greene completed his 350th parkrun.

He may be approaching his 80th birthday, but nothing can tempt the dedication levels of Saddleworth Runners member Tony.

He’s been running for longer than most, starting as a youngster and continuing to keep fit as he gracefully ages.

So, when Tony arrived to complete his milestone parkrun at Stamford Park in Stalybridge, members of the community were beyond excited to cheer him around the course.

With an array of colourful balloons tied to his body, Tony completed the 5k distance in style, bringing a smile to many faces while doing so.

As he crossed the finish line, crowds clapped for Tony, recognising his incredible achievement.

“I’ve done parkrun for a long time now, I often come down to Stamford Park, but I also love Manor Park in Glossop, I think that may be my favourite.

“I would encourage anyone to run, it’s a great way to keep active.

“Parkrun is often seen as less esteemed than races, but really it’s excellent and it’s free to take part,” he said.

A friendly and familiar face at local parkruns, Tony can often be seen championing fellow runners.

One of his most admirable characteristics is his will to succeed. Tony doesn’t let anything stop him from completing a race.

He even takes the time to lead groups at Saddleworth Runners, encouraging people to keep moving and feel the benefits of exercise.

His group, ‘The Shufflers’ is aimed at runners who are new to fell running, or just want to enjoy an easier run.

His story is one of true inspiration, someone incredibly worthy of praise.

Keep an eye out for Tony at your next local parkrun, you may just see him storming around the course.
