Visitors to Dove Stone ask for stricter control of parking areas

Chaos . . . The busy Dove Stone car park area yesterday.

This was the scene facing frustrated residents whose lives are disrupted daily by inconsiderate drivers to Dove Stone.

The pictures were taken at 4.15pm yesterday (Wednesday) at Bradbury Lane leading to Forty Row in the centre of the beauty spot reservoir.

One resident said: ”We need signage that clearly states it’s a two way road past the toilet block. This is a continuing problem. Where drivers force their way past us hurling abuse.

“We need stricter control on entry. The cars were double parked throughout the whole carpark. We need Marshalls on every weekend and everyday during the school holidays.”

“This was Bradbury lane today. Parked all the way down the lane. There were abusive drivers who made our children cry.”

She added that the site had become strewn with rubbish by disrespectful visitors and said those collecting parking fees should also provide adequate waste facilities.

A spokesperson for Oldham Council said: “Dove Stone is a very popular visitor attraction, particularly during periods of good weather, and it can become extremely busy.

“We want everyone to enjoy the countryside and local beauty spots responsibly, so visitors are encouraged to plan ahead for their journey, park considerately and respect the local area and residents.

“People also asked to take their litter home, keep dogs under control and follow on‑site signage to help protect the environment and wildlife.

“Fires, barbecues and fireworks are strictly prohibited. Anyone caught lighting a fire could face a fine of up to £2,500 or potential prosecution.”

United Utilities, who work  with Oldham Council and RSPB and continue to fund the car park marshalls at Dovestone say marshalls will be in place again this weekend.

But a UU spokesperson said:”Ultimately though, we need visitors to Dove Stone to be respectful to the environment and our neighbours.

“This means taking their litter home with them or using the bins provided, only parking in designated areas and not lighting any fires or BBQs anywhere across the site.”
