Two new station plans take step forward

Plans for two new train station upgrades in Greater Manchester have taken a step forward.

Both Mossley and Greenfield stations are set to be overhauled as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU). This multi-billion-pound programme by Network Rail would see major upgrades across the section of the route between Stalybridge and Diggle in Saddleworth.

The platforms at both stations, in the Tameside and Oldham boroughs, will be extended, giving the space for longer services, which would allow more seats for customers.

Now a scoping report has been submitted to Tameside council – which looks at the main environmental, economic, and social issues with the project before planning permission is requested.

If plans go ahead, Mossley station would be relocated 300 metres northeast of the current station, in the direction of Greenfield. This will allow space to provide a better travel experience through an improved, more accessible station which will include a new footbridge and lifts.

Following consultation on the plans in September last year for both Mossley (pictured above) and Greenfield stations, Network Rail are hoping to push through their plans and see building work start by summer 2028.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “Following the public consultation held in September, the feedback is now being considered by our projects team for the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), to see how we can integrate this in our work where appropriate.

“We anticipate works commencing at Mossley and Greenfield Stations in summer 2028 and it will take approximately 18 months to complete. We would like to thank the local community and businesses for sharing their thoughts as part of the consultation.”

The overall TRU project is a programme of improvements that will transform journeys across the North, better-connecting towns and cities through more frequent, faster, greener trains between Manchester, Leeds and York, running on a better, cleaner and more reliable railway.
