TransPennine Express (TPE) is set to run Northern’s stopping services between Leeds and York over the Easter weekend – freeing up the other train operator to boost capacity between Leeds and Manchester Victoria via Halifax.
The move is part of a collaboration between the two train operators, which are part of DFTO, the public sector rail owning group with responsibility for the railway.
TPE’s services between Leeds and York will call at Cross Gates, Garforth, East Garforth and Micklefield.
Andrew McClements, Customer Experience and Transformation Director at TPE, said: “This is one of the many ways we are working with other train operators to keep customers on the move.
“We’re pleased to be able to work with Northern to make sure that all our passengers get to where they need to be.
“Services will be busy over the Easter weekend, with many events taking place across the network. We’re therefore urging customers who are travelling to check before they travel and allow extra time when making their journey.”
Transpennine Route Upgrade improvement work is also taking place over the Easter weekend in the Mirfield area, meaning that TPE services will be unable to run between Huddersfield and Dewsbury, as well as Huddersfield and Wakefield Kirkgate.
Additionally, due to engineering work in the Mirfield area, trains between Leeds and Manchester will be diverted via the Calder Valley route through Hebden Bridge. As a result, Northern services on this route are expected to be much busier than usual.
TPE will be running to an amended timetable, with rail replacement buses in operation between Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Leeds, Wakefield Kirkgate and Leeds between Saturday 19 April and Monday 21 April.
