Leading theatre company Tamasha unveils the world premiere of Tamasha Tales - a new series of short form commissions that honours global storytelling and explores cultural intersectionality through interdisciplinary collaboration.
Tamasha Tales invites artists to breathe new life into folk tales, myths and oral stories from the Global South, offering bold reinterpretations that speak to the social and political realities of today.
These stories, passed down through generations in visual, written and oral traditions, bridge childhood and adulthood, carrying timeless truths that cross borders and connect us all.
In its inaugural year, Tamasha Tales presents two co-creative artist teams: Rani Moorthy in collaboration with Sarah Sayeed, and Testament in collaboration with afshan d’souza-lodhi.
Together, they represent a diverse range of disciplines, including writing, sound design, rap, and spoken word performance.
This new series reflects Tamasha's commitment to championing Global Majority artists -giving them the space to reclaim and reimagine stories outside Eurocentric traditions. With each commission rooted in a distinct cultural perspective, Tamasha Tales sparks fresh conversations across identities, generations and art forms.
Pooja Ghai, Artistic Director at Tamasha said: “These stories have travelled through time – now it’s our artists’ turn to take them somewhere new.
“Tamasha Tales is where tradition meets imagination, and we cannot wait to see what unfolds…”
Each co-creative team will premiere their respective short audio pieces at a dedicated online listening event on Thursday, November 27 from 7.30pm.
Audiences will have the opportunity to experience both works, followed by a Q&A session with the artists.
Beyond The Mountain by Rani Moorthy and Sarah Sayeed, is a reimagining of the Malaysian legend Puteri Gunung Ledang, recast as a short audio piece and is in English, Malay, Chinese, Bengali, Sanskrit, and Tamil.
Noor And The Fallen Son by Testament and afshan d’souza-lodhi, is a tale of myth, love, superstition, desire, and generational curses — sparked when a midnight ritual to banish jinn draws the neighbour’s attention to Noor and is in English. Tamasha Tales is commissioned and produced by Tamasha.
