Sirens, superheroes and a special guest entertain children at free summer holiday session

A popular Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) event transformed an Oldham park into a world of imagination and adventure.

The High Sheriff of Greater Manchester Mark Llewellin paid a visit to the park's weekly HAF session to meet the families enjoying a packed programme of activities and meet the teams making a real difference for the community. 

Organised every Wednesday during the school holidays by the council and the Friends of Stoneleigh Park community group, the sessions provide local children with opportunities to stay active, make friends and enjoy a healthy lunch in a safe and welcoming environment during the school holidays. 

During his visit, Mark met children and families taking part in a range of activities including sports, face painting and a giant bouncy castle and helter skelter.  

One of the highlights of the day was the chance for children to sit in a police car and police van, where officers welcomed them aboard to explore the vehicles, ask questions, and learn more about their role in the community. 

The police car proved particularly popular, with children taking turns sitting in the driver's seat, sounding the siren and activating the flashing blue lights. The hands-on experience sparked plenty of excitement and laughter, while helping to break down barriers between young people and the police by creating positive interactions in a relaxed and friendly setting. 

Mark Llewellin said: "It was wonderful to see so many children enjoying themselves, making friends and taking part in activities that keep them active, happy and engaged during the school holidays. 

"The opportunity for young people to meet police officers in this environment is invaluable in building trust and understanding. The dedication of the council, Friends of Stoneleigh Park and volunteers is making a real difference to local families." 

Carrie-Ann Varey, Holiday Activities and Food Manager for Oldham Council, said: "The HAF programme is about much more than keeping children occupied during the school holidays. It's about creating opportunities for children to be active, enjoy healthy food, build confidence and make new friends. 

"Days like this, where children can try new experiences, meet community organisations and simply have fun in a safe environment, are exactly what the programme is all about. We're delighted to welcome the High Sheriff and showcase the positive impact these sessions have on local families." 

The Holiday Activities and Food Programme (HAF) is a government-funded initiative providing enriching activities and nutritious meals outside of term time. 

The High Sheriff's visit highlighted the power of community partnerships in creating memorable experiences and supporting the wellbeing of children and families. 

As he toured the park, children were eager to ask him questions about his role as High Sheriff, appointed by His Majesty the King to help maintain justice and preserve peace in Greater Manchester. 

The Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Programme is aimed at children and young people aged five to 16 who are eligible for benefits-related free school meals.
