Greenfield’s Off the Rails Comedy Club celebrates its 25th year at the end of this month.
Starting from humble beginnings, the club moved to the spacious function room at The Royal George in Greenfield 18 years ago and has since gone from strength to strength, earning a nationwide reputation amongst comedians and customers alike.
”We get regular customers from as far afield as Blackburn and Bradford so, it looks like we're getting something right,” said promoter Rob Riley.
Comedians attending the big birthday bash include Radio 4 regular Mark Steel who is making his Greenfield debut; Liverpool's Paul Smith will be downsizing from his usual audiences of over 10,000. TV's Josh Pugh joins breakthrough acts Jules O'Brian and Seeta Wrightson. Compering duties are in safe hands with 'Rails regulars Mick Ferry and Justin Moorhouse.
When asked if running a regular comedy club has changed much since 2001? Rob said: “Yes and no. The basic premise is exactly the same, give the audience and comics as good a time as possible and they'll come back. Marketing shows are completely different though. Flyers, posters and press releases were very much the order of the day whereas online advertising, social media and mailing lists seem to take up most of my time these days.
“Oh, we have more great line ups coming in 2026 and we'll keep running as long as people keep coming. Only the other day, I was thinking how weird it is having regulars who weren't even born when we first started!”
Off The Rails Comedy Club takes place on the last Sunday of every month at The Royal George, Greenfield.
The birthday show takes place on Sunday, May 31, 2026 at 4pm and 8pm at The Royal George, Manchester Road, Greenfield, OL3 7HX
Tickets: Both May shows are currently sold out in record time, but fans are encouraged to check for June and July listings featuring Andrew O'Neill and Tez Ilyas.
