Saddleworth Rushcart Show another success

Morris dancers escort the two-wheeled cart piled high with rushes.

Saddleworth's historic Rushcart Show returned to the village this weekend.

Hundreds of people turned out for the celebration packed with an eye-catching decorated, two-wheeled cart piled high with rushes.

The cart is escorted by Morris dancers, and this year’s event witnessed troupes from all over the country, including Chelmsford, Suffolk and Earlsdon and the home group, Saddleworth Morris.

The colourful event was once celebrated across the country, but is now only staged in northern England.

Saddleworth has continued to mark the occasion.

On Saturday, the festivities began at The Commie, before heading to the King William IV in Greenfield, back to Uppermill for dancing at the park, the Hare and Hounds and the Saddleworth Museum.

Next stop was on Gartside Street and the White Lion in Delph, followed by the Swan Inn and the square in Dobcross.

Crowds later gathered at The Navigation and Huddersfield Road, also in Dobcross, finishing off Saturday, the festival returned to The Commie.

On Sunday, the cart left Uppermill Square as it headed to St Chad's Parish Church for a Rushcart Service.

The celebrations then continued at the Church Inn and Cross Keys, with Morris dancing and worst singer and gurning competitions.
