Residents invited to Oldham anti-fraud and cyber-crime awareness events

Police are holding both events in Oldham.

Oldham Police are inviting local people to an anti-fraud and cyber-crime event to raise awareness of seasonal promotions such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday ahead of the festive season.

Greater Manchester Police is working alongside partners including the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) and Action Fraud to raise awareness and offer advice on how to protect yourself online.

Seasonal promotions such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday can pose additional risks for buyers falling victim to scams and fraudulent listings.

Officers are asking people to remain vigilant when using online sale sites such as eBay and Facebook Marketplace, and be aware of the dangers of private sales on platforms including Whatsapp, Facebook and Instagram.

There are also multiple risks associated with investment opportunities including cryptocurrency, trading schemes, and online mentorship programmes which are often promoted via social media and digital platforms.

People should consider the following advice and always report anything suspicious to Action Fraud.

  • Stop and think before clicking a link or scanning a QR code

  • Take time to research the offer or seller

  • Ensure the webpage you are using for payment is secure

The Oldham Fraud and Cyber Crime Awareness event takes place between 10am and 1pm on Wednesday, December 17 at Oldham Library on Greaves Street and then the following day at Failsworth Libray on Oldham Road at the same time.
