Police issue advice for vehicle owners after rise in thefts

Police in Oldham have issued security advice to vehicle owners after an increase in car thefts across the borough.

Officers have seen a particular increase in vehicles with keyless entry and start being taken.

Greater Manchester Police say there are a number of ways that motorists can minimise the threat of their vehicle being stolen.

They advise people to do the following:

• Store keys away from doors, windows or any place they can be seen or easily located

• A steering or wheel lock can be enough of a deterrent to stop a thief

• Invest in a faraday bag - they are lined with metal material and can block the key's signal

• Invest in a tracking device - it won't stop your vehicle being stolen but can significantly increase the chances of police locating and returning a vehicle to the rightful owner

• Car theft typically occurs in residential areas during the night - talking to neighbours can help the community be alert to anyone behaving suspiciously

• Stay vigilant. If you notice anything unusual in your community, report it to the police via the LiveChat facility of the GMP website, call 101 or report on line at https://crowd.in/3CuRFJ. Always dial 999 in an emergency.
