Opening date of Oldham’s new market announced

Oldham's new market - opening date revealed.

The opening date of Oldham’s new market space has finally been announced. The new building on Yorkshire Street will replace the current Tommyfield Market, which is due to be demolished.

Around 70 traders are due to move into the new venue next to The Spindles shopping centre,on the site of the former TJ Hughes.

The doors to ‘The Market’ will open to the public for the first time at 9am on Saturday, 28 March. The launch will see a ‘full day of entertainment and family activities’, and the first 100 guests will receive a goody bag.

It will also be the first time residents can make use of Parliament Square, a new community space outside the new market and events space.

Announcing the launch, council boss Arooj Shah said: “This is a huge moment for Oldham. We know how much markets mean to local people. Our new market is about backing our amazing local traders, giving them a space they deserve, and bringing a wave of fresh energy into the centre of our town. It’s a modern, vibrant space that puts local talent at its heart, exactly what Oldham deserves.”

The opening is a long-awaited step part of a £450m regeneration project taking place in Oldham town centre, which has also included the opening of the Egyptian Room foodhall and the renovation of the Old Library into a new townhall.

The move into The Spindles has been beset by delays. Traders were originally supposed to relocate to the new facility in September 2025.

But stall-holders were only informed late in September that the transfer would not be taking place due to issues with kitting out certain specialised units in the new venue.

The change left small businesses in a difficult spot, with many loyal customers confused about where they were.

After a six month delay, stall owners are now preparing to make the move, with the last day of trade at Tommyfield Market set on the March 21.  Opening hours will be the same as the old market, 9-5pm Monday to Saturday with no trade on Sundays.

The new event space at the Spindles – The Loom – will also be open to bookings from March 28.
