A Royton resident has scooped the Sustainability Champion award at this year's Anchor Loving Later Life Awards.
Kathleen Dunn, of Runnymede Court housing, has been recognised for her efforts to improve her environment through sustainable gardening.
The annual awards run by Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit provider of housing and care for people in later life, recognises the achievements of residents who have made a real difference to their communities.
A resident judging panel chose winners from across nine categories. The winners were announced by Anchor’s Interim Chief Executive, Amanda Holgate, during a special virtual celebration where they received certificates to acknowledge their win, as well as £100 in gift vouchers.
Kathleen was nominated for transforming her front door area, using potted plants and baskets during spring and summer. Her efforts also inspired other residents to do the same.
Kathleen said: "I'm extremely pleased to have won the sustainability award. I’ve lived in many different places during my life, and no matter where I am, my first instinct is to care for my surroundings - and there’s no better way for me personally than to plant, plant, plant. It’s great to hear that I have encouraged others to do the same."
The judges commented: "Kathleen shows how even the smallest patch can be transformed with imagination and care. By turning her view into something uplifting, she’s not only brightened her surroundings but inspired others - a wonderful example of sustainability in action.”
This year's winners showcase how age is no barrier to making a difference. Highlights include a neighbour like no other who has enhanced community spirit by organising get-togethers, charity events and games nights; a beloved therapy cat spreading happiness in a care home; and a digital champion who is helping residents embrace technology to transform their community experience.
Amanda Holgate, Interim Chief Executive of Anchor, added: “At Anchor, we are proud to shine a spotlight on the extraordinary achievements of our residents through our Loving Later Life Awards.
“It's inspiring to see how our residents continue to learn, grow, and support one another in their communities. Every nomination we receive tells a story of someone making a positive impact, and we're proud to celebrate these remarkable individuals. Huge congratulations to everyone who won and was nominated.”
