Oldham officer tackling crime and excelling in study receives prestigious award

A police officer has been awarded the Dean’s Highly Commended Award in recognition of his outstanding achievements as a student officer on the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) programme.

PC Samuel Sagar earned the prestigious award from the University of Salford. This recognition reflects not only his exceptional academic achievements but also the dedication he has demonstrated throughout his time with Greater Manchester Police. 

Currently serving as a neighbourhood officer in Oldham, PC Sagar recently graduated with an impressive 2:1 degree, balancing the demands of frontline policing with the challenges of completing an undergraduate degree. 

PC Sagar said when asked about his award: "When I joined the PCDA course in 2023 it meant returning to education after several years away, this felt daunting, especially while balancing the demands of frontline policing. 

“However, I was determined to pass the course, so achieving a 2:1 and receiving this award is something I'm incredibly proud of. 

"I was shocked to learn I had been awarded the Dean's Highly Commended Award. Being dyslexic, academic learning has not always come naturally to me, but I've always believed in working hard, staying determined and giving my best in everything I do. 

“To have that recognised means a lot to me. 

"My advice to anyone undertaking any policing pathway is to stick with it. Anything worth achieving takes hard work, but it's incredibly rewarding. 

"I'd like to thank Sergeant Rob Coggin and Inspector Amie Whitehead, as well as Hannah Melia and Dr Richard Huggins from the University of Salford, for always supporting me. 

“Most importantly, I'd like to thank my family, who have supported me every step of the way. I couldn't have done it without them." 

PC Sagar likes to focus his attention on arresting repeat offenders, getting positive stop searches and using tools like ANPR technology and intelligence-led policing tactics to identify and stop vehicles to disrupt criminality. 

His enthusiasm, initiative, and proactive policing style have made him a valued member of the Oldham district. 

Neighbourhood Inspector Amie Whitehead said: “For as long as I have been supervising Sam, he has put his heart and soul into not only his policing but also his university course work. 

“To hear that this has been recognised is really great. 

“It is an honour to have Sam as part of our Oldham Neighbourhood Team, and I am certain that this is only the beginning and he has a bright career ahead of him. 

Oldham’s district commander Estelle Mathieson added: "I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to PC Sagar on receiving the Dean's Highly Commended Award from the University of Salford. 

"This is a fantastic achievement and a testament to his hard work and commitment, both academically and in his role as a police officer. 

"The award comes as no surprise, as PC Sagar is highly regarded by colleagues across the district and consistently demonstrates an outstanding work ethic and dedication to serving the communities of Oldham. 

"We are incredibly proud to have him as part of the Oldham team, and this recognition is thoroughly deserved."
