Just before lunchtime on Sunday, Oldham Mountain Rescue Team were contacted by Greater Manchester Police, who had received a 999 call from a female who had suffered an ankle injury somewhere in the Dovestones area.
The call was terminated due to a poor phone signal before any further details could be given.
Fortunately, as the team were assembling in preparation to start checking some of the potential locations, further information came through with a grid reference quickly identified as Birchen Clough.
The Team soon had a fast party, including the team doctor, with her and were able to assess and administer pain relief.
She was then evacuated on our stretcher, first up out of the gully onto Middle Edge Moss, before a short carry and a rope lower down to the weir at Birchen. From there, she was taken down to the waiting North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust ambulance for further assessment and onward transport to hospital.
OMRT leader Rob Tortoishell said: "We wish the casualty all the best for a speedy recovery.
"If you are heading out into the hills, we recommend downloading a location app that will generate a grid reference, for example OS Locate. This is much more appropriate than some of the other location services available, not least because OS mapping is the system we always convert to."
