
An Oldham man who was awarded an MBE for bringing communities together through football has sadly died.
Jewel Miah (48), passed away yesterday (Friday) following a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
The father-of-three was a well known figure in the Oldham area for his voluntary services to British Bengali football.
He also won the Pride of the Civil Service North West award, as well as the Manchester Football Association’s volunteer of the year award.
Jewel, who lived in Coppice, soon became a widely respected and recognised member of the community.
A role model to the younger members of the Asian community, his tireless work never stopped and became a force for good to salvage youngsters who may be otherwise lost to drugs and crime.
Jewel, a border force officer at Manchester Airport, played a pivotal role in introducing junior football in Glodwick through his chairmanship of the Red Star Bengal FC.
Three years ago, A list couple David and Victoria Beckham hosted the Queen’s Jubilee lunch for five recipients of the MBE including Jewel and his 13-year-old daughter Hannah.
Jewel, who was also known as a charity champion, took part in many challenges with Hannah raising money for many charities over the years.
Tributes have flooded social media overnight with many saddened by the sudden demise of the community champion.
Werneth Ward Councillor Shoab Akhtar, said: "Jewel was a true gem of Oldham and a lovely man."
Lt Col Glyn Potts MBE DL, former head of Newman College Oldham, described Jewel as a fantastic advert for humanity, adding: "A gentleman and a committed man to all within Oldham."
Councilor Zahid Chauhan, former Mayor of Oldham, said: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Jewel Miah MBE, who lost his courageous battle with cancer.
"Mr Miah was a dedicated and respected community leader whose tireless commitments to Oldham made a lasting impact on countless lives. His passing is a significant loss to our town. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and all who had the privilege of working alongside him."
