Oldham group invites members to next dementia hub

Fatima Women's Association host the dementia hub each month.

An Oldham group is inviting members of the South Asian community who are living with dementia to their next meeting.

Fatima Women’s Association on Marlborough Street, Glodwick, will be hosting the next session on Thursday, September 25 from 11am-1pm.

During the event, which is also open to carers, members can enjoy a talk and poetry by Dr Abdul Shakoor, who is a link worker for Tameside, Oldham and Glossop Mind specialising in counselling, training and education for BAME communities around dementia and learning difficulties.

Dementia, according to The Alzheimer’s Research UK, is not something that just happens to everyone as they get older.

It is caused by different diseases, and it affects various parts of the brain. In the UK, almost one million people are affected by the disease.

Some people may be more likely to develop dementia than others, including those who have had a stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and depression.

The South Asian community is seeing a faster rise in the number of people diagnosed with dementia than the general population.

The South Asian Dementia hub takes place on the last Thursday of each month.
