Oldham-born news broadcaster John Stapleton has died at the age of 79.
The veteran broadcast journalist sadly passed away in hospital this morning (Sunday).
His agent, Jackie Gill, confirmed that he had Parkinson’s disease, which was complicated by pneumonia.
Born in Oldham in 1946, Stapleton began his career in newspapers before presenting BBC’s Panorama and Newsnight, where he reported from conflict areas in the Middle East, EI Salvador and Argentina during the Falklands War.
He was married to the late journalist and broadcaster Lynn Faulds Wood.
A huge Manchester City Fan, Stapleton had strong links to Manchester presenting shows on BBC Radio Manchester and writing for the Manchester Evening News.
Broadcasters from across the news world have paid their tributes to Stapleton.
In Oldham, Jim McMahon, MP for Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton offered his condolences on X: “Very sorry to hear of the passing of Oldhamer and broadcast legend Stapleton. My thoughts are with his friends and family.”
