Oasis Academy Leesbrook came under the spotlight last night (Wednesday) as they staged a vibrant production of Shrek the Musical.
Pupils from Years 7 to 10 began rehearsals for the show back in October, with them committing to two sessions per week, totalling around four hours per week.
Since then, the cast and crew have poured months of hard work into the production, which has grown into a professional-standard performance.
The art department, music department, caretakers and technicians worked tirelessly to deliver high-quality sound and lighting, creating amazing handmade props and sets!
Alumni also returned to support the team, reflecting the lasting impact of the school’s performing arts culture. It has been an academy wide effort.
Sherri Wither, Head of Drama, said: “The transformation of our department over the past three years has been incredible. We have gone from strength to strength.
“This show reflects the huge talent, dedication, and commitment of our students. I am so grateful to our leadership team, especially our Principal Mrs Andrea Mitchell, a former drama teacher.
“Her support and belief in the value of the arts in education has really pushed us to new heights.
“What we’ve created here is of a truly professional standard. But beyond the performance, the students have developed confidence, resilience, and a sense of pride in expressing themselves.
"They’ve also gained vital life skills, from teamwork and time management to problem-solving and personal responsibility. It’s been a joy to see them grow throughout this journey.
"The reputation of our productions continues to grow year on year. This year’s show has almost completely sold out, with 500 tickets sold."
Members of the local community, families, parents, students, and even staff from other Oasis Academies attended last night's show — a true celebration of the arts and the role they play in bringing people together.
Shrek the Musical is a stage adaptation of the beloved DreamWorks animated film.
It tells the story of Shrek, a grumpy but kind-hearted ogre who sets out on a quest to rescue Princess Fiona in order to reclaim the deed to his swamp.
Along the way, he is joined by the endlessly talkative Donkey, and together they encounter a host of hilarious fairy-tale creatures.
At its heart, the story is about friendship, acceptance, and learning to love yourself and others for who they truly are.
With catchy songs, witty humour and powerful messages about identity and belonging, Shrek the Musical is as heart-warming as it is entertaining.
The final show is being staged at Oasis Academy Leesbrook tonight from 7pm-9pm.
