Nurse and colleagues to take on Three Peaks charity walk for heartbreaking cause

A dedicated nurse and colleagues at Saddleworth Medical Practice are taking part in the Three Peaks charity walk on Saturday, August 1 … in a bid to raise funds for a heartbreaking cause.

Lynn McCann is pictured with her daughter Bethany and two of her children diagnosed with rare Ushers Syndrome type 2, which is the most common form of the condition, characterized by congenital, moderate-to-severe hearing loss and progressive vision loss that typically begins in adolescence. 

Lynn said: “I originally started the appeal for a ‘sight bucket list’ for two of my grandchildren, Emmeline and Abel. They were both born deaf and have worn hearing aids since they were only weeks old and have coped amazingly.  

“In December 2025 they were both diagnosed with Ushers Syndrome, which means they will begin to lose their sight. It is unsure at what age, but it commonly starts in adolescence with night blindness. The condition which causes blindness is called Retinitis pigmentosa. 

“A friend of my daughters started a fundraiser to help the children to see things before their sight deteriorates. Abel is yet to plan his, but Emmeline has done a list which includes seeing a volcano; meeting Hannah Hampton, the English professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Women's Super League club Chelsea and the England national team and being a mascot for her teams; seeing the snow in Norway; seeing the luminescent algae in the sea.” 

The nurses and staff at Saddleworth Medical Centre in Uppermill have organised a cake sale and organised the Three Peaks Challenge.  

Lynn added: “And we also want to raise money for the charity “Cure Usher “which funds essential genetic research for a cure.”
