Neighbourhood Policing Week highlights ongoing work by officers across the force

Police seized 25 litres of illicit suspected THC liquid from an address in Werneth.

This week marks the beginning of national Neighbourhood Policing Week 2025 - which will see forces across the country highlight and celebrate the vital work being done in local communities.

In Greater Manchester, teams across the force area workday-in, day-out to tackle the crimes that matter most to the people.

The proactive crime-fighting approach has seen police continue to tackle crimes that people report - including burglaries, vehicle crime, and anti-social behaviour.

Each team works on a precise and bespoke approach to the problems that present themselves in their area, working with the relevant partners, local authorities and public to drive down crimes and tackle the root causes of the issues.

This can include working with specialist GMP resources to tackle specific issues – such as off-road bikes working with councils to secure closure orders and seizing everything from money to potentially deadly substances. In Oldham, 25 litres of illicit suspected THC liquid was seized from an address in Werneth.

Officers’ work has seen – in the 12 months to end of May as opposed to the previous year – a range of improvements and continued focus on tackling neighbourhood crimes.

This includes:

  • An increase in the proportion of crimes solved across the core neighbourhood crimes of burglaries, thefts, robberies, and vehicle crime

  • A reduction in reported anti-social behaviour offences across the force

  • Across the force (including neighbourhood crimes), officers made 2,382 more arrests than the previous year for a range of offences.

  • More than 3,000 arrests for shoplifting offences over the last year

Each of the districts has a named local police officer, and the ongoing growth and use of their community messaging service Bee In The Loop has meant local policing teams can provide the latest news on events and incidents straight into a person’s inbox.

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Boyle, GMP’s lead for Local Policing, said: “Officers across the entire force get out in their respective communities and areas every single day, responding to issues that we know people want us to tackle.

“From locking up burglars to working with stores to crack down on shoplifting and proactively patrolling hotspots, neighbourhood teams take on all manner of work as they continue to ensure that the villages, towns, and cities of Greater Manchester are well-policed and protected.

“This week will help highlight all of the great work that is done by our officers, while providing the public a chance to see what their local teams can offer them. I would recommend people join Bee In The Loop and visit our social media pages for news on further events and activities.”
