Martial arts students earn Black Belts at Major North-West Grading Event

Oldham Martial Arts Students.

More than 90 Martial Arts students have achieved one of the sport’s highest honours at a major grading event.

The prestigious event saw four new Black Belts and one new 2nd Dan from Oldham at the event hosted by Family Martial Arts Centres at Bury Grammar School.

The students from ages nine to 50 were awarded  their Black Belts following years of dedication and discipline.

In addition to new 1st Dans, 15 students were promoted to 2nd Dan, and two to 3rd Dan, with the grading overseen by senior Masters from the Family Martial Arts Centres Group.

Dan Thompson’s journey stood out as a powerful reminder of what inclusive martial arts can achieve. He lives in Burley but trains at the Prestwich Centre.

After training for four years at the Prestwich Centre, Dan, who has Down Syndrome, graded alongside fellow students and successfully demonstrated his skills, spirit, and strength of character.

“Dan is the perfect example of what’s possible when you believe in someone’s potential and create an environment that supports all abilities,” said Master Brett Nelson.

“At Family Martial Arts Centres, we don’t just teach punches and kicks—we build confidence, character, and community. Dan has embodied all of that and more.”

Master John Parkinson added: “Family Martial Arts Centres gave Dan more than martial arts—they gave him belonging, structure, and belief in himself.

“This Black Belt is the result of years of patience, love, and teaching from a team that truly understands what inclusivity means.”

The event brought together students from multiple Family Martial Arts Centres across the region, including Prestwich, Middleton, Oldham, Denton, and more.

It marked a milestone not just for the individuals promoted but for the wider martial arts community’s commitment to personal development and lifelong learning.
