The scene of the incident last night.

Emergency services winched a man to safety following reports of risk to life on Oldham Way last night.

Police and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) attended to reports of a man on the wrong side of the bridge just after 7pm.

The incident happened at the roundabout in Park Road, King Street and Oldham Way. The bypass was closed in both directions until the man was rescued.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just before 7.30pm last night, two fire engines from Oldham Central and Hollins fire station, along with the Technical Response Unit from Ashton and Hydraulic Platform from Oldham, were called to reports of a man on the wrong side of the bridge near Oldham Way, Oldham.

“Crews arrived quickly at the scene. Firefighters used the Hydraulic Platform and ropes to assist colleagues from North West Ambulance Service and Greater Manchester Police to rescue the man from the bridge.

“Firefighters were in attendance for around thirty minutes.”
