Local doctor and councillor launches Healthy Hero Competition in Alexandra Ward Schools

A local doctor recently visited a primary school to introduce a creative competition designed to promote healthy eating habits.

Dr Zahid Chauhan officially launched the community Healthy Hero Competition at Alexandra Park Junior School, which encourages primary school children to think creatively about their health and wellbeing through a drawing competition based on the theme “What does being a Healthy Hero mean to you?”. 

As part of the competition, pupils are being asked to design their own Healthy Hero superhero who promotes healthy habits. Children can use their imagination to create a superhero whose powers are inspired by positive health choices, such as eating fruit and vegetables, brushing their teeth, exercising and drinking water. 

During his visit, Dr Chauhan spoke to pupils about the importance of healthy living, including eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, getting enough sleep and looking after mental wellbeing. He also officially launched the competition, inviting pupils to use their creativity to share what being a Healthy Hero means to them. 

The competition is being delivered as part of a wider community health awareness initiative, with schools across Alexandra Ward being invited to participate. 

Entries will be judged on creativity, originality and the positive health message they communicate. There are six prizes up for grabs, including a £100 gift voucher for the overall winner and five runner-up prizes of £50 gift vouchers each. The closing date for entries is October 14, 2026. 

Dr Chauhan said: “I’m delighted to have officially launched the Healthy Hero Competition at Alexandra Park Junior School. It was fantastic to meet the pupils and speak to them about the importance of looking after their health and wellbeing.  

“As a practising doctor and local ward councillor for Alexandra Ward, I am passionate about encouraging children to develop positive healthy habits from an early age. I wanted to create an initiative that would be both educational and enjoyable, giving children the opportunity to think creatively about what being healthy means to them. I also wanted the children to have fun with the idea of turning healthy habits into super powers, showing that simple choices such as exercising, eating well, drinking water and looking after our emotions can make us all a little bit like superheroes.  

“I’m grateful to Alexandra Park Junior School for supporting this initiative and I hope we can encourage more schools across the ward to get involved.”
