July: The busiest month on record for Greater Manchester Police

Greater Manchester Police recorded its busiest month on record in July 2026, according to the latest figures.

During the month, GMP received a record-breaking 152,000 contacts from the public - the highest number ever recorded in a single month. 

Not every contact is related to an emergency. Calls ranged from requests for advice and non-emergency reports to hoax calls and accidental pocket dials. Every contact had to be assessed to ensure those most in need received the right response. 

Despite this demand, officers attended 14,991 Grade 1 emergency incidents across Greater Manchester, achieving an average response time of 7 minutes and 54 seconds.  

GMP also responded to 10,266 Grade 2 incidents, with an average response time of 1 hour and 2 minutes. 

Officers arrested an average of 200 offenders every day, helping to prevent crime, protect vulnerable people, and bring offenders to justice. 

The criminality tackled ranged from the most serious crime - including murder, robberies and sexual assaults - to local issues that neighbourhood officers relentlessly tackle, including shoplifting, theft, and anti-social behaviour. 

Detectives continued investigating offences and supporting victims, while neighbourhood officers remained focused on tackling anti-social behaviour, addressing local concerns and building confidence within communities. 

The contribution of the police staff was equally vital. Intelligence teams, analysts, investigators, administrators and specialist support staff helped keep the force running effectively behind the scenes, while custody staff managed the high number of detainees entering custody and supported the criminal justice process. 

Assistant Chief Constable Steph Parker said: "July was the busiest month in GMP's history, and I would like to thank every officer, member of staff and volunteer who worked tirelessly to serve the people of Greater Manchester during this unprecedented period of demand. 

"From our frontline officers and neighbourhood teams to detectives, custody staff, FCCO colleagues and the many police staff working behind the scenes, everyone played a vital role in keeping our communities safe. 

"I would also like to thank the public for their patience and assistance. The information and cooperation we receive from our communities helps us protect those most vulnerable, prevent crime and bring offenders to justice. 

"Our priority will always be to keep our communities safe and well. Despite the significant pressures we faced throughout July, the resilience shown across GMP ensured we continued to deliver for the people of Greater Manchester when they needed us most."
