Hulme Grammar School U13s crowned World Schools Netball Champions

Hulme Grammar School Under-13 netball team showed off their winning trophy.

Hulme Grammar School is celebrating a historic sporting triumph after its Under-13 netball team was crowned champions at the prestigious World Schools Netball Cup, held at the world-class sports facilities of Loughborough University.

The Oldham-based squad secured the global title following a spectacular 22-19 victory over JESS Dubai in the final on Saturday, June 27.

The victory was defined by a stunning display of resilience. In a tense opening few minutes on the Loughborough courts, Hulme Grammar fell to a daunting 5-0 deficit against a clinical JESS Dubai side.

Refusing to let the pressure overwhelm them, the U13s staged a dramatic turnaround, showcasing immense composure, exceptional teamwork, and precise shooting to claw their way back and secure the global title as the final buzzer sounded.

Adding to the school’s historic achievement, Hulme Grammar’s standout player, Lainey G, was named the game’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) for her exceptional, dominant performance on court during the final.

In a post-match interview, MVP winner Lainey said: “It’s so great, we’ve come here, gelled so much as a team and it’s been an incredible experience.”

This historic win marks a defining moment for the school’s sports department, highlighting the dedication of both the young athletes and the coaching staff who have worked tirelessly throughout the season.

“We are immensely proud of our Under-13 netball team,” said Kirsten Pankhurst, Principal at Hulme Grammar School.

“To compete on a global stage at a world-renowned sporting institution like Loughborough University is an achievement in itself. But to come away as World Schools Netball Cup Champions after overturning a 5-0 deficit in such a demanding final against a top-tier side like JESS Dubai is extraordinary. The team demonstrated incredible sportsmanship, resilience, and tactical brilliance.”

The victorious squad returned to Oldham this week to a heroes’ welcome from fellow students, staff, and parents. The full squad included:
