Huge police presence to take place in Oldham following large brawl

There will be extra officers out and about in Oldham this weekend following a large-scale disorder in the town centre last night.

The huge brawl broke out when a group of men gathered on Union Street at around 4.50pm yesterday (Thursday). 

There were reports of around 100 youths fighting and throwing fireworks, triggering a dispersal order to be put in place. Enquiries are currently ongoing to identify those involved. 

Police have implemented a patrol plan for today (Friday) and over the weekend to prevent further disorder and to protect those going about their daily business. 

Inspector Kat Murray, from Oldham Central Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “The disorder last night was alarming for our residents in Oldham, and we know how much anti-social behaviour can disrupt people’s lives. 

“This patrol plan is a proactive measure to help us prevent any further ASB incidents in the area as well as reassure the community. 

“Officers will be patrolling the area to enforce the order and engage with the general public. If you are having issues with ASB, I would urge you to get in touch with your local team, who will be best placed to offer advice and support on the issues you are having.” 

A winter crime blitz is currently under way in Greater Manchester as teams across the force come together to support a Home Office-led campaign. 

Local police teams across the region will be supporting the Winter of Action as part of our Operation North Star which began in November. 

Oldham police said neighbourhood teams are always eager to hear from their community and will be ready to take action when necessary.
