High speed chase through oncoming traffic ends in arrest

The Toyota Aygo driven by the suspect.

A high-speed police chase sparked mayhem on Saturday night when a driver sped into oncoming traffic, veered onto a grass verge and then fled on foot before being arrested.

Police from the Chadderton and Werneth Neighbourhood Policing Team were patrolling the area at around 11pm, when they discovered a white Toyota Aygo.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle however the driver failed to do so and a reckless pursuit took place where the driver of the Toyota Aygo drove dangerously down the wrong way on Chadderton Way, twice in both directions, driving into oncoming traffic before eventually being driven off-road onto a grass embankment leading to Busk Road.

The suspect abandoned the vehicle on the grass embankment and after a brief foot chase, he was detained and arrested in a wooded area on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, driving without insurance and possession of cannabis.

The man has been taken into custody for questioning where following interview and evidential file has been compiled and sent to the crown prosecution service (CPS) and a decision has been made by CPS providing the police with authorisation to charge him for all offences.

He was due to remain in custody until he attends court this morning (Monday).

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “The Chadderton and Werneth Neighbourhood Policing Team are commited to ensuring the safety of everyone who uses the Oldham and wider Greater Manchester road network.

“We will continue to target offenders who drive dangerously on our roads in order to achieve vision zero to make our roads safer and feel safer for our communities.”
