Have your say on Oldham Council's budget consultation

Leader of Oldham Council, Councillor Arooj Shah.

Oldham Council is beginning the process of setting the budget for 2026/27, and whether you live, work or travel into the borough, your views continue to play a crucial role in shaping priorities.

The public consultation, which opened yesterday (Wed) and runs until Monday, February 16, will help the Council gather opinions to understand the priorities of the businesses and residents.

Based on current proposals, it will deliver a balanced budget for the financial year ahead, which, if agreed, will include a number of budget saving proposals.

Leader of Oldham Council, Cllr Arooj Shah, said: “The focus with this proposed budget is making steady, meaningful improvements that residents can feel in their everyday lives.

“This includes creating safer streets, supporting local communities, and investing in the services that help our borough thrive.

“We are being careful with public money, open about the challenges, and focused on taking a responsible approach to guarantee Oldham remains financially stable and resilient.”

The council said that the people of Oldham remained at the heart of its decision-making asking residents and businesses two key questions:

  • Where do you think the Council should save money?

  • What areas do you think the Council should be spending money on?

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, Corporate Services and Sustainability, Cllr Abdul Jabbar, said: “The borough is growing; we’re building more houses, driving forward with our transformation plans, and creating new opportunities for our people - but we still have savings to make.

“We’re asking residents for their views on how we can improve efficiencies, continue delivering quality services, and plan for the future. Your feedback will help us make informed decisions that strengthen services and support our communities.

“Now the consultation has launched, we would encourage everyone to get involved and have their say on how we shape our final plans.”

The council asks residents to tell them which areas they think they should spend money on, and where they think it should save, by taking part in the consultation here

Councillors will then make a final decision on budget proposals at Budget Council on March 4.
