GMP launch 'darker nights' campaign

Police launch 'darker nights' campaign.

Now that the clocks have gone back and with the nights drawing in - Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is launching ‘Darker Nights’.

The campaign provides residents across the region with information to protect their homes and vehicles from burglary and theft.

GMP is committed to tackling neighborhood crime, and over the past year, its response has helped reduce the number of recorded burglaries by 24 per cent and vehicle crime by five per cent.

When comparing data from the last five years, there is a consistent reduction, with 500 fewer burglary victims recorded each month across GM since May 2021 (9,144 crimes in year to August 2025, down from 15,519).

Vehicle crime is also down by a quarter since May 2021 (17,118 in Sept 2025 compared to 23,500 in May 2021).

These improvements highlight the ongoing efforts of officers who regularly patrol communities across Greater Manchester, engaging with residents and responding to local concerns. While progress has been made, the focus remains on tackling crime and ensuring offenders are brought to justice.

As part of the commitment, officers have dedicated burglary initiative, Operation Castle, which ensures that every reported incident is attended and investigated, with all reasonable lines of enquiry pursued.

Chief Superintendent Helen Critchley, force lead for neighbourhood crime, said, "Darker Nights highlights the proactive steps we're taking to tackle neighbourhood crime - increasing visibility in communities, executing warrants, and targeting offenders who threaten your safety, property, and peace of mind.

“We recognise the deep impact burglary and vehicle crime can have - not just on victims, but on their families too. These crimes are invasive, and we know that they can significantly affect your wellbeing and sense of security.

“Our neighbourhood officers will be out on patrol throughout autumn and winter, but we also rely on your support. If you see anything suspicious, report it. Your information helps us act swiftly and effectively. If you know of someone who is committing these offences or where stolen property is being stored, you can share this with us via Crimestoppers.”
