From pupil to teacher - Harris Kahn returns to his roots

When Helen Rowland, CEO of Focus-Trust, met teacher Harris Kahn little did she know he had once been a pupil at one of its primary schools.

She was delighted to learn about his journey from being a pupil at Roundthorn Primary School in Oldham, to a teacher.  

Reflecting on his time at the school, Harris said: “My time at Roundthorn Primary Academy was really positive.  

“I was one of five siblings who attended the school, so it was a big part of our childhood. I have so many good memories from my time there, and all of my teachers played a role in shaping who I am today. 

“From watching chicks hatch in Reception to going on a trip to London in Year 5 as a school councillor where we visited the Houses of Parliament and saw Buckingham Palace - those experiences have always stayed with me.  

“I had such an enjoyable time in primary school, and it played a big part in inspiring me to become a teacher myself.”

Harris went on to complete his PGCE at Manchester Metropolitan University. He now teaches Year 3 at Deeplish Primary Academy,  a school he describes as being “right at the heart of the community.” 

 “Everything the school does is centred around the children, and there is a real sense of support from both staff and parents,” Harris explained.  

“One of the most rewarding parts of teaching for me is seeing children learn and grow and supporting them not only academically but also by building strong relationships with them. 

“I am particularly passionate about making sure all children can succeed, including those with SEND or who may face barriers in their learning. Being part of the same trust that I was part of as a child makes the experience even more special, and it feels great to now give back to the same community.” 

Harris began his teaching career in September 2025 at Focus-Trust primary school Deeplish Primary Academy. 

Principal Ewan McPherson praised his contribution, adding: “Harris has been at Deeplish for almost two terms and has made a great start to his career as a teacher.  

“He has slotted into life at Deeplish, building strong relationships with children, parents and staff. It is wonderful to see how Harris has grown from his time as a pupil at Roundthorn to now giving back to the Focus-Trust community as a teacher.”
