A much-loved former Oldham Mayor has passed away after a long battle with lung cancer.
Ginny Alexander held the mayoral role from May 2019 to 2020 and because of the Covid pandemic it was extended to May 2021.
During her time as mayor, Ginny and her husband of 35 years Adrian, supported many local charities and good causes.
In a social media post on Facebook, Mr Alexander paid tribute to his loving wife, adding: “It is with deep regret that our beloved Ginny Alexander passed away in the early hours of Wednesday (November 12) morning.”
Mr Alexander and her sister, Karin Kanitschew, thanked those who helped and supported Ginny throughout her illness.
He added: “We would like to shout out a big thank you to Rachael, our neighbour who provided a great deal of care and support for Ginny.
“Her niece Zhenya also provided care for Ginny until her passing. We would like to thank Dr Kershaw nurses, palliative care team and the carers team.”
Mr Alexander aknowleged his wife’s work as mayor outlining that she had supported many charities during her two years as mayor including one of her favourites Oldham Cats Rescue.
He asked that as an alternative to flowers and if people wished to instead donate to the Oldham Cats Rescue, Middleton Road, Manchester M24 2AD.
Mr Alexander said Ginny’s final wish was to have a private funeral and, therefore, no funeral arrangements will be posted on social media.
