Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that the cause of the weekend’s Dovestone wildfires will be fully investigated.
A spokesperson for the fire service has warned people not to use disposable barbecues, light campfires or set off fireworks on or near moorland, adding: “In the current dry conditions, even a small spark can quickly develop into a significant fire.”
It is understood the fireworks were set off at Dovestone Reservoir as a memorial tribute to Karl Holland (18), who tragically drowned in the reservoir on Friday, July 10.
On Saturday evening (July 11), footage shared online showed youths gathered at the popular beauty spot setting off fireworks which sparked a major backlash from local residents.
The fire service spokesperson added: “At just before 8.45pm on Saturday, July 11, fire crews were called to reports of a fire in open moorland near Dovestones Reservoir, Greenfield.
“Firefighters remained in attendance on (Sunday 12 July), supported by specialist wildfire resources and partner agencies, as they continue to tackle the incident.
“Overnight, crews monitored the fire from safe locations due to challenging terrain and low light conditions. At first light, firefighters returned to the moorland and have continued work to contain the fire and prevent further spread.
“Specialist wildfire units, off-road vehicles and drone support have been deployed to assist operations, with crews focusing on limiting fire spread across the moorland and ridge areas.
“United Utilities is supporting the multi-agency response and further tactical options, including the potential use of a helicopter for water drops, are being explored.
“Firefighters remained at the scene throughout the day while work continues. Members of the public are asked to avoid the area where possible to allow emergency services and partner agencies to carry out their work safely. An investigation is ongoing into the cause of the fire and crews are still at the scene."
Greater Manchester Police was also contacted for a statement.
The fire service is urging the public to:
-
Avoid the area.
-
Keep access routes clear.
-
Windows and doors closed where smoke is affecting communities.
-
Don't call 999 to report visible smoke already associated with the incident unless there is immediate danger.
-
No disposable BBQs, campfires or fireworks.
-
Allow emergency services to work safely.
