A First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO) customer who helps organise affordable food for those in need has been named as the housing association’s December Hidden Hero.
Volunteer Gavin Millwood has played a vital role in delivering reduced cost food service, The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT) that many across Oldham rely on.
The 45-year-old from Derker has been giving his time for nearly five years after he got involved at the start of the Covid pandemic.
TBBT allows those in need to receive three bags of shopping at a cost of £8.50 a week. Lead volunteer Mr Millwood liaises with FCHO staff, responds to customer enquiries, and ensures the service runs smoothly in the four locations it takes place.
He is also often the first to welcome and train new starters from both FCHO and TBBT.
Responding to news that he is a Hidden Hero, Mr Millwood said: “I was surprised to hear I have been nominated for the award, and I am very pleased.
“I got into volunteering during the pandemic, and I haven’t looked back. I really enjoy meeting new people, working alongside other volunteers, FCHO and getting on with customers.
“I’ve gained a lot of new skills over the years and now I manage the sessions I attend, which has been great for me.”
Mr Millwood was nominated by FCHO stronger communities manager Naomi Martin Smith, and he also received a £50 voucher.
She said: “Gavin has been a dedicated volunteer for the last five years. He continues to give his time two days every week – 52 weeks a year, come rain, snow, or wind. The only breaks are bank holidays.
“Gavin’s commitment goes far beyond packing food or unloading vans. He is respected and relied upon by everyone. He is known for his supportive nature and his unwavering focus on customers.
“He’s not afraid to speak up when he sees a need, whether for volunteers or for the customers. His dedication, leadership, and willingness to go above and beyond make him an outstanding example of community spirit.”
She added: “Gavin doesn’t just volunteer, he makes a difference. And for that, we are proud he is December's Hidden Hero.”
