Jeremy Corbyn has arrived in Oldham tonight to talk about his new political party to gain the support of local constituents.
More than 400 people arrived at the Empire Suite on West End Street in Westwood for ‘An evening with Jeremy Corbyn’ to learn about ‘Your Party’, a new left-wing group he has formed with Coventry South MP Zarah Sultana.
Local councillors and staff gathered outside the venue to greet Jeremy, who said: “I will be talking about the poverty and injustice people face in our society, the false promises made by Farage and the far right in our community and above all our message is we will be bringing people together to conquer the levels of poverty and equality in our society.
“Together for peace around the world, for peace in Gaza, peace in Ukraine and peace in Kashmir. We will do that by giving people their own rights and their own self determination and their opportunity to make their own decisions for the future – not by selling arms to Israel but by supporting the Palestinian people – that's the message I will be putting out tonight.”
He joked: “You know what there’s already so many people trying to get into the venue and it hasn’t even started yet.”
Councillor Shoab Akhtar welcomed Jeremy to Oldham, adding: “We are delighted to welcome Jeremy to the town, and this is not the first time that he’s been here.
“He has been here previously as the Leader of the Labour Party, but it is the first time he has come as the leader of the new party and we’re willing to listen to him and see what his party stands for and then as an Oldham group we will make a decision in terms of whether we go with Jeremy Corbyn and Zara Sultana or stay as Independents.
“We’ve heard about his party in the media but tonight will give us the opportunity to hear directly from Jeremy. We will be meeting up with him separately to ask some private questions and then we will take it from there.”
