Emergency gas works update in Chadderton

Emergency works are taking place to keep gas flowing to thousands of homes in Oldham and deal with issues associated with a key pipeline.

Cadent, which manages the local gas network, has decided to move from repairing a gas distribution pipe which runs under Grimshaw Lane in Chadderton to completely replacing it, given its current condition. 

In order to protect supply to local homes while Cadent does this, a ‘bypass’ will be installed this week. This involves adding a temporary route for gas to flow while engineers upgrade a 50-metre section. 

To maintain a safe work space, the current road closure on Grimshaw Lane will remain in place. This is likely to be until at least the end of January. 

Cadent’s engineers had tried to complete repairs on the pipe, which runs deep under the road before going underneath Rochdale Canal. 

Phil Hendrick, Head of Operational Delivery (North West), Cadent, said: “This section of pipe was originally installed in 1910, which makes it one of the oldest operational pipelines in North West England. 

“The right thing to do is replace it, rather than find ourselves having to keep coming back to carry out more repairs, which is disruptive to the local community. 

“This involves major engineering within a tight space. Over the coming days, we will be installing a ‘bypass’ to ensure gas continues to flow to our customers, and then we will start to complete the replacement of a 50-metre section of the pipeline. 

“This means that we need to keep the road closed for the time being, which I hope people understand is for safety-critical reasons. We thank everyone for their patience while we complete this essential work." 

He added: “If you smell gas, act immediately and call the national gas emergency service on 0800 111 999*, day or night. Please do not assume it is related to these works. There is a chance it may not be and it needs to be checked out. It a good idea to save the number into your phone now, so that it is there if you ever need it.”
