OIdham Council’s winter clothes appeal is underway with many families benefitting already.
Following the success of last year’s winter clothes appeal, the Community Wardrobe and Oldham Family Hubs are again supporting communities through the colder months.
The 2025 Winter Wardrobe campaign began this year at Shaw Family Hub, where 60 families in need of support were welcomed to pick out free winter coats, duvets, and cosy pyjamas for their children.
While attending the drop-in event, parents also learned more about the wide range of support, activities, and services available through Oldham’s Family Hubs.
Family Hubs provide vital help and activities to families with children aged 0–19 - and up to 25 for those with SEND - across the borough, ensuring that every child has the best possible start in life.
The Community Wardrobe Oldham was founded by Sally Maher in 2022 with her friend Janine Whillans.
It was launched in memory of her best friend Emma Jones in Sally’s shed and has since grown into a much-loved borough-wide initiative.
The project collects new and good-quality pre-loved clothing and redistributes it to families in need of a helping hand in the colder months.
Charlotte Carson attended with her eight-month-old daughter Francesca, who she brings to baby play sessions at the Family Hub every Wednesday.
"This is a nice thing for the community," she said. "At the same time I've donated things that she's grown out of. It just makes sense.
"We come here every Wednesday and if you have a question that needs answering, you've got the support of the other parents who come here as well as those who work here."
Dionne Hamilton needed a coat for her five-year-old son. She said: “I needed a coat for him to wear while walking in the rain because he's outdoorsy. I managed to find one for him. I think this is a brilliant idea."
Child and Family Practitioner Kerry Livingstone said: "It has been fabulous. A lot of families are struggling with the necessities, especially in the run up to winter."
Last year’s Winter Wardrobe appeal hosted three successful drop-ins at Spring Meadows Family Hub, Medlock Vale Family Hub, and Beever Family Hub, helping hundreds of local families to stay warm and connected.
This year even more families will be able to access essential winter clothing in a friendly, welcoming community space.
Council Leader, Cllr Arooj Shah attended the drop-in to see the campaign in action, adding: "It’s wonderful to see the community coming together through the Winter Wardrobe appeal.
“No family should have to worry about keeping their children warm, and this project shows the real spirit of Oldham — people looking out for one another.
The kindness and generosity of everyone involved, from volunteers to donors, are what make Oldham such a special place. The support offered here brings comfort and warmth to families who may be finding things a little tougher this winter, and I’m so proud to see the difference it’s making.”
The next drop-in will be held at Stanley Road Family Hub on Derby Street, Chadderton, OL9 7HX on Tuesday, October 28 at 9.30-11.30am.
