Oldham Council’s Strategic Transport Team has been awarded the prestigious ICE North West Future Resilience Award in recognition of its work to improve safety around local schools.
The award celebrates the team’s Safer to Schools audit and the implementation of three School Streets schemes, including the camera enforcement scheme on Medlock Way, Lees.
These projects aim to create safer, healthier environments for children travelling to and from school.
Judges described the initiative as “simple but effective”, calling it a “blueprint for future schools”.
They also praised the team’s strong collaboration with partners and stakeholders.
Deborah Willemen, Principal Transport and Active Travel Officer, said: “We’re incredibly proud to receive this award.
“Over the past two years, we’ve faced significant challenges, but thanks to the dedication and collaboration of everyone involved, we've delivered a scheme that’s already making a real difference in our communities.”
The Future Resilience Award highlights not just innovation, but the lasting impact of the Council’s work to support active travel, cleaner air, and safer streets for children and families.
